Ministries

Adult Liturgical Ministers – Three areas comprise adult liturgical ministry: Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Lectors and Sacristans. Because of their unique and integral role in the liturgy, these ministries require training and are only open to parishioners with the approval of the pastor. To volunteer for these ministries please make an appointment with the pastor.

  • Eucharistic Ministers assist with the distribution of the Eucharist during mass and are often also commissioned to assist in bringing the sacrament to the sick. (current schedule) ( First Friday Adoration)
  • Lectors read the sacred text at Sunday mass, Holy Days of Obligation, and at other special liturgies during the year. (current schedule - PDF) ( First Friday Adoration)
  • Sacristans are assigned to assist the priest by preparing, and clearing the sacred vessels, books and other items used during Sunday, daily, and other liturgies. They are also commissioned to be both Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers.

Altar Servers – Children from the fourth grade and above at both St. Ambrose School and in our religious education program are welcome to be altar servers assisting at Sunday masses, solemn celebrations, and special liturgies. (current schedule - PDF)

Altar Society – Our altar society cares for the sacred linens used during the mass and keeps the church looking orderly. They also help with decorating the Church for important feasts.

Choirs – Our parish is blessed with four groups that assist with music during the liturgy.

  • Children’s Choir – Comprised of children from the 3rd grade and up, the choir assists at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday masses several times a month.
  • Contemporary Music Ensemble – This group assists at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday vigil mass as well as other special liturgies.
  • Spanish Music Group – Since our 12:30 p.m. Sunday mass is said in Spanish, we have a dedicated group of musicians and singers that lead the congregation in song.
  • Traditional Choir – Singing at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday mass, high feast days, and other liturgical events, this choir strives to provide a repertoire of song from the rich heritage of Christian music.

Finance Council – Recognizing the need for good stewardship of the parish community’s resources, the Church mandates that each parish have a finance council to advise the pastor and make suggestions on how best to utilize, protect, and invest parish funds.

Hospitality Group – Being made to feel welcome both for parishioners and guests is always important. To help do this, we have a dedicated group of ushers and hospitality ministers who assist before, during and after masses. They also provide a coffee hour after the Sunday masses.

Ladies Of Charity – Founded by St. Vincent de Paul to minister to the less fortunate, the members of the association provide assistance to the needy in our area especially through food baskets during the holiday season and through other special appeals.

Prince George’s Hospital Volunteers – For many years the parishioners of St. Ambrose Parish have given volunteer service to our local hospital and at the adjacent Spellman nursing facility. They bring comfort to patients and also act as ministers of the Eucharist.

Parish Pastoral Council – Contemporary parish life needs to have a clear sense of vision for the future, planning for the present and a commitment to our heritage of faith from the past. It is the role of the pastoral council to advise the pastor in all of these areas, and to make recommendations that benefit the parish.

St. Vincent de Paul Society – The members of our local conference have offered for almost half a century help and support to the people of Prince George’s County. Through donations to our poor box and food to our pantry the Society continues to fulfill its mission by assisting the pastor in direct service to the poor.

  • Prince George's House Sunday Meal is a service of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and has been providing a warm dinner for the 35 men of the Prince Georges's House Men's Shelter on a monthly basis for over 20 years. Volunteers are needed to prepare part of an entree, side dishes, desserts or beverages on the 4th Sunday of each month. It will then be delivered to the shelter. This is a great project for a group of families, a scout troop, or just those eager to help those in need. Please contact Chris Seese at: 301-773-6293 to sign up for a specific month and/or item.
Our parish organizations and ministries are always in need of dedicated people. If you would like information, or if you would care to volunteer for any of these ministries and organizations, please call the rectory or e-mail us for information and contacts.
